June 14, 2016 was a proud day here at NSSA. We had three fine young men graduate from the Martin C. Barell school program…in preparation of their entrance into NSSA’s Adult Services program.

Teachers, families, and district personnel have all done a great job in preparing the graduates for their next step at NSSA. Through job sampling or training, the Adult Services program works to ensure that the adults we serve are able to grow and develop to their maximum potential. Our primary concern for the adults we serve is that they continue to grow to their greatest level of independence through employment and skills required of daily living.

Families were beaming with pride as students accepted their certificates from teachers and school district personnel.

NSSA’s Adult Services clients let their inner artists out when a painting teacher visited them earlier this week. Lilly Polishuk from Individualized Family Care  led the group in a rendition of Van Gogh’s Starry Night.

Welcome to the Farm

i Jul 15th No Comments by

NSSA’s Adult Service program has a number of different job sites they visit weekly. One of their jobs is at Manor Farm, a local farm managed by Starflower Experiences.

At the farm, the clients do vocational agriculture jobs such as weed, deadhead, rake, paint fences, and do general cleanup.

The farm is about 5 acres and very charming, with a historic house and several outbuildings.

This week they were working on weeding one of the raised beds that held mint, tomatoes, lavender and sage.

Once this and another raised bed are cleaned out, they can plant whatever they choose in there.farm college 1

When the trash can is full of weeds, the clients take turns dumping the can.

A job well done, guys!

They Could Have Danced All Night…

On Friday, May 1, students at Smithtown High School East transformed their cafeteria into an under-the-sea wonderland for the NSSA Spring Dance.

Barell students and NSSA Adult Service clients dressed up in their springtime finery…some teacher “dates” were surprised with floral corsages (so sweet!).

Smithtown students provided and served pizza, salads and beverages, and boogied with our students and clients on the dance floor. There was even a photo-booth set up complete with fun props!

Thanks again to Smithtown High School East for inviting our students and clients and for being such great hosts. Thanks also to NSSA’s Stacey Agosta for coordinating the event.

NSSA Adult Service Clients create “Piece of Hope” products

product

NSSA Adult Service clients have a new project – they have been creating the “Piece of Hope” product line, which consists of an all organic Body Butter & Body Scrub. The production of this product gives each of our Adult clients an opportunity to learn new skills and utilize individual strengths, while being a productive member of a team.

Skills they are learning and utilizing include:

  • Pouring and mixing
  • Units of measure
  • Monitoring time
  • Packaging and labeling
  • Identification and proper use of utensils and appliances
  • Taking turns and waiting
  • Asking for assistance
  • Independently initiating tasks
  • Set up and clean up
  • Taking inventory

These skills help foster independence, confidence and pride. While photographing them in action last week, one client proudly stated “I can do this by myself,” and there were many big smiles around the worktable.

Body Butter and Body Scrubs are available now by placing an order with Christine MacPherson at cmacpherson@nssa.net. Click here for ordering and pricing information.
