Since its inception the Martin
Barell School
has conducted Visitors Days one day each month. This has afforded family
members, teachers, and other interested professionals an opportunity to
learn more about the school and its philosophy.
On each visit an overview of the school program is given. The
organization of class rooms, which is quite different from that of a
typical classroom, is discussed. The ABA
model is briefly explained, as well as the model used for speech
consultation. As many of the students at the Martin C.
Barell School
use augmentative communication devices, information is provided on this
subject as well.
Visitors are given an explanation of the individualized motivational and
reinforcement systems as well as the activity schedules used to best serve
the students. Insights are offered on the manner in which the teachers
address behaviors requiring correction or reinforcement.
Each visit culminates in a tour of the classrooms that brings to life
what was discussed beforehand. At the end of the tour the main points of
the visit are reviewed and a question and answer forum is provided.
Visits can be scheduled by calling NSSA’s office at 516-579-5087.
